Literacy Links The New Hampshire Center for the Book An organization established to celebrate and promote reading, books, literacy, and the literary heritage of New Hampshire and to highlight the role that reading and libraries play in enriching the lives of the people of the Granite State. The Believe in Books Literacy Foundation A family initiative that provides parents of children ages 3-7 with bookbags on loan. The bookbags, filled with high quality children's books, are distributed through public schools, public libraries, and preschools in the Mount Washington Valley. Children's Literacy Foundation/CliF A nonprofit organization dedicated to nurturing a love of reading and writing among children throughout New Hampshire and Vermont. CLiF supports children's literacy by awarding sponsorships to rural public libraries, homeless shelters, women's shelters, centers for at-risk youth, and bookmobiles that serve children who have limited access to great books. CLiF also works with well-known children's authors and illustrators who spread their love of books by giving free presentations to children in rural communities. The New Hampshire Humanities Council A private non-profit organization that strengthens New Hampshire by providing free public humanities programs in its communities. Such programs include What Is New Hampshire Reading This Month?: a statewide reading program that brings people together to discuss books and ideas at our town libraries, bookstores, and cafes and Connections, a literacy program for adult new readers. Links to Early Learning Project A 17-month federally funded pilot project awarded in September 2002. Public libraries will partner with community healthcare, early care and education, and child protective services in Rockingham and Strafford counties to support sustainable early learning and early literacy opportunities. New Hampshire Council on Literacy A nonprofit organization formed by a group of adult literacy students, tutors, and educators to work with adult literacy programs to eradicate illiteracy in New Hampshire. New Hampshire Department of Education, Bureau of Adult Education The Bureau of Adult Education provides grants to school districts and private not-for-profit organizations for the purposes of offering educational services to adults who have not received a high school diploma or GED certificate, or do not read, write, or speak English. With funds provided by the Bureau of Adult Education, local communities provide services to adults whose skills range from very basic to high school level. Each New Hampshire county has an Adult Tutorial Program which provides one-on-one tutoring with trained volunteers for any student who meets the eligibility criteria. New Hampshire Even Start Statewide Family Literacy Initiative An initiative designed to break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy by improving educational opportunities for low-income families by integrating components of early childhood, adult basic education, and parenting education into a unified family literacy program. The program requires a cooperative partnership between a school district and a community-based organization. Current programs are in Claremont, Concord, Dover, and Nashua. New Hampshire Partnership for Literacy A consortium of agencies, organizations, and programs dedicated to broadening and supporting family literacy services to all low-income and undereducated families in New Hampshire. New Hampshire Reads AmeriCorps A statewide program that addresses the America Reads Challenge - to help all children become independent, motivated readers by the end of 3rd grade. The program promotes literacy for young children and families by providing stimulating reading, writing, and arts activities in a variety of community settings. Reading Excellence Program A three-year, $3,273,656 grant to support research-based reading activities in New Hampshire's neediest districts and schools, including Manchester, Nashua, Rumney, Seabrook, Stratford, Stark, and Stewartstown. Ready to Learn A PBS service created especially for families and child care providers which helps those who care for young children encourage a child's natural curiosity and love of learning. Ready to Learn combines quality television with community outreach and innovative educational materials and includes free community workshops and resources. Provided in New Hampshire by The Knowledge Network, New Hampshire Public Television. Road Readers A van filled with fun books and arts activities that visits young children and families in familiar and accessible places in communities in Belknap and Merrimack Counties. Weekly visits feature books, songs, games, arts activities, and healthy snacks. Road Readers also lends books and other reading-related material to families. Road Readers is a program of Community Action Program Belknap-Merrimack County. Contact Peg Downing. Rockingham Community Action Programs Programs designed to address a wide spectrum of needs for low-moderate income individuals, including a Family Literacy Project, the Gift of Reading, the Portsmouth Adult Basic Education Program, Reading is Fundamental, and Tales to Go. Start with the Arts An instructional program for 4, 5, and 6-year-olds that uses the arts to assist young children, including those with disabilities, in exploring themes commonly taught in early childhood classrooms. The program promotes the development of basic literacy skills and offers engaging arts activities teachers can apply in all curricular areas. Resources are included for parents to continue their children's learning at home. Contact Karen Bessette. Strafford County Head Start They sponsor two reading programs. Book Buddies identifies individuals who sponsor children in the Head Start program through the purchase of books. Traveling Tales brings lively, age-appropriate literacy activities and resources to various locations in Strafford County on a daily basis.
